CASE STUDY 2: BERNDNAUT SMILDE (3 PHOTOS)

Date taken (approx): –
Location: Basement

What do you like about this photo?
I really like the composition of this image. Smilde has used a prism, light and some sort of wall paper to create this effect. It looks as if the light shining from the prism should be in the photograph portraying a rainbow going from one side of the wallpaper to the other. It makes the image look magical and surreal. The wallpaper contains dull colors and the prism shining upon it makes it look so much more colorful.

What could you learn from this photograph/photographer? How could you use it in your own work?
Maybe using different objects and combining them into one image would help me broaden my ideas when taking future photographs. I could use a prism in my work to brighten up an image, instead of using a colored filter.

What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
This photograph doesn’t really show my photography skills, i simply wrote some lyrics on some paper, got my camera at an angle and took the picture. I added a filter called ‘space’ to it to make it look more interesting and colorful. The lyrics are quite meaningful thats why i chose them

What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
I would cut out lettes from a magazine or newspaper and create a type of collage of letters to make my lyrics. This way is more inventive and shows the different types of skills i can do.

CASE STUDY 2: BERNDNAUT SMILDE (3 PHOTOS)

Photographer: Berndnaut
Date taken: 2010
Location: Nimbus
What do you like about this photo?
I like the use of colors he has used to compose this image, the room looks colorful and bright and the smoke looks mysterious and misty. The photograph looks out of perspective or maybe the camera is just at a different angle and looks unusual.

What could you learn from this photograph/photographer? How could you use it in your own work?
I could learn to use special smoke effects in my work to make it look more creative and show that i can do experiments.

food

Date taken: 12.02.2013
Location: kitchen table
Settings: ISO 100 other settings aren’t showing up

What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
I took this photo a few days before i actually should of because it was pancake day so i thought using a pancake would be a brilliant example of food. I think the texture of the pancakes because theres some places which are darker than others, every pancake is individual so they have their own patterns.

What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
I would of had more of the food in the photo instead of turning it into a macro close up shot, maybe have the oranges in there and break the segments and arrange them in a composition. I would of also tried capturing a pancake being flipped in the pan but i didn’t have enough time to change my settings to a slow shutter speed etc.

Technology

Date taken: 13.02.2013
Location: Living room
Settings: ISO 100 shutter speed 1/60 apeture f3.8

What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
I like how i’ve not over complicated this photograph and done simply what it says; take a picture of technology. I was going to add a black and white filter to it to add contrast of technology being new and black and white meaning old and vintage. I like how you can see different types of technology too.

What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
If i had the chance to take this photo again i would compose it in a different way and add more technology such as wires, batteries and things like that to get a mixture of items.

Something you hate

Date taken:09.02.2013
Location: Indoors
Settings: shutter speed 1/100 apeture f5.6 ISO 100

What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
I really dislike smoke so i thought this photograph would be perfect, you can see the smoke flowing out of the persons mouth and you can tell the difference of how heavy the smoke is coming from the mouth and slowly dissolves (gets denser) the further away it goes. I also like the pattern what the smoke makes.

What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
Whilst taking this photo i was getting used to my settings on my new camera so i was looking at what results would look best, thinking of contrast, zoom, depth of field etc to get the best possible photo. I would change the angle of the shot and get more of the body in instead of making it a close up side Portrait shot.DSC_0075
